I bought Rougui expecting a strong cinnamon taste. Why does this tea smell more floral or roasted?
Rougui is the name of the tea cultivar, not a promise of a strong cinnamon-spice flavor. Its aromatic character can include warm spice or cassia-like notes, but the expression changes with the growing site, processing, roast, and brewing. Some Rougui teas lean more floral or fruity, while others show more roasted or woody character. If you are looking for a tea that tastes exactly like cinnamon bark, this may not match that expectation.
Will the charcoal roast overpower the floral fragrance?
Traditional charcoal roasting can bring out toasted, woody, and smoky impressions. If the roast is particularly prominent, it may make delicate floral notes harder to notice. Try a slightly shorter infusion and smell the warmed leaves before drinking. Roasting is part of this tea's style, but it should not be confused with deliberately smoke-flavored tea.
My first cup tastes bitter and leaves my mouth dry. Is that a sign of poor-quality tea?
Not necessarily. A high leaf-to-water ratio or a long infusion can extract more astringency than you enjoy. Start with around 5 g per 100–110 ml and a short first infusion. If the tea still feels too strong, reduce the leaf quantity or steep for less time. A well-adjusted brew should let you explore the tea's aroma and texture without overwhelming your palate.
Why does the tea taste different after the first few infusions?
Wuyi Rock Oolong is often brewed through multiple short infusions. The balance of aroma, roast, spice, sweetness, and mineral impressions can shift as the leaves open. A first infusion may seem more direct, while later cups can reveal a different balance. Avoid judging the tea from one overly long first steep.
Is Jin Jiaoyi Rougui the same as Niulankeng Rougui?
No. They are associated with neighboring parts of the Wuyi mountain landscape, but they are distinct growing sites. Jin Jiaoyi occupies a more elevated, south-facing cliffside slope with greater direct sunlight than the more enclosed ravine environment associated with Niulankeng. The two teas should be appreciated as different expressions of the Rougui cultivar and their respective terroirs.
What does “Golden Chair” actually mean? Is it a tea grade?
Golden Chair is the English rendering of the mountain name Jin Jiaoyi. It comes from the natural shape of the mountain, whose surrounding cliffs and recessed central slope resemble a traditional Chinese armchair. The word “Golden” also carries cultural associations with value and distinction. It is a place name, not an official grading category.
What is the “young Niu Rou” comparison I sometimes hear about?
“Niu Rou” is a familiar nickname for Niulankeng Rougui. The informal comparison describes Jin Jiaoyi as a nearby, more sun-exposed expression within the broader Niulankeng landscape. It is a way tea enthusiasts talk about the relationship between the two growing areas, not an official classification or a guarantee that one tastes exactly like the other.
Why does my Rougui taste smoky instead of sweet?
Roast character can become more noticeable when the tea is brewed very strongly. The roasting process also influences the balance between toasted, woody, floral, and fruity aromas. Try reducing the leaf quantity slightly or shortening the infusion. If the tea still tastes overwhelmingly smoky to you, that may simply mean you prefer a lighter-roasted oolong.
How can I tell whether a Wuyi tea really comes from a famous Zhengyan location?
A famous place name alone does not establish the origin of a particular batch. Useful evidence includes the source garden or plot, harvest records, production details, and traceability from the tea maker. For a specific Jin Jiaoyi harvest, batch-level documentation is more meaningful than a general claim about the mountain's reputation.
Is this tea too strong for someone who usually drinks lighter oolong?
It depends on how you brew it and how much roast character you enjoy. Traditional charcoal-roasted Yancha generally has a more concentrated profile than many lightly oxidized, lightly roasted oolongs. If you are new to Wuyi Rock Tea, start with a smaller amount of leaf, short infusions, and a moderate-strength brew. This gives you room to discover the tea's character without making the first cup too intense.
