Description

Some people carry a tea bag. You carry a small ceremony.

This is not a mass-produced travel mug set. It is a compact, handcrafted Gongfu tea kit built for slow moments outdoors—trailhead sunrises, campsite afternoons, vanlife mornings, rooftop picnics, office tea breaks, or anywhere you want real tea without setting up a full tea table.

At its heart is a genuine wood-fired, hand-pinched Zisha teapot paired with a protective leather travel case. Choose from natural cowhide leather or natural Urushi lacquered cowhide, with four configurations combining different teapot and case finishes.

For a practical introduction to the brewing method this set is designed for, see our How to Brew Gongfu Tea guide.

What’s Inside This Portable Gongfu Tea Kit

This is a complete Gongfu setup in a compact case small enough for a daypack, tote, glovebox, or carry-on spinner.

The Teapot: Hand-Pinched, Wood-Fired Raw Ore Zisha

The teapot is not slip-cast or mold-made. Each one starts as a lump of raw ore Zisha clay. The potter pinches the body, shapes the spout, trims the lid seat, and adjusts the pour by hand.

Because of this handmade process, each pot has slightly different proportions, tool marks, and kiln character.

The teapot is fired unglazed in a wood kiln at high temperature. Wood ash naturally lands on the surface and melts into individual fire marks, blush tones, carbon flashes, and tiny ash deposits. No two pots look exactly alike.

The clay is described as raw ore Zisha, with no chemical additives or blended industrial clay. The unglazed surface is porous and gradually develops a deeper, softer character with regular use.

The optional double silver-wrapped version adds hand-applied silver to the spout and rim—the two areas most exposed during pouring and handling. The silver wrap creates a quiet contrast against the rough, wood-fired clay while adding another layer of handcrafted detail.

The Fairness Pitcher

The fairness pitcher is sized to the teapot rather than oversized. It allows you to decant the full infusion before serving, helping prevent the tea from continuing to steep while you pour into individual cups.

Its clean-pouring spout is designed for controlled serving without unnecessary dripping down the side.

The Tasting Cups

Three Puyu Ruoshen tasting cups fit inside the case.

Their thin walls and smooth rims are designed for small servings, allowing you to focus on aroma, texture, sweetness, bitterness, and aftertaste rather than treating Gongfu tea like a large mug of tea.

Warm the cups with hot water before brewing and serving to create a more comfortable tasting experience.

The Tea Tools

The handmade aged iron tea scissors are useful for cutting compressed tea, opening sample pouches, or trimming cord.

A tin lid rest gives the teapot lid a clean place to sit during a brewing session.

The botanical-dyed or persimmon-dyed tea mat protects the surface underneath, while three flower-shaped cup separators help prevent the cups from rubbing against one another during transport.

The Case: Natural Urushi Lacquered Cowhide vs. Natural Cowhide

The standard case is handcrafted from natural cowhide leather. It is simple, durable, and designed to develop character with use.

The Urushi version takes the same leather concept in a different direction.

Raw leather can absorb moisture, oils, and tea spills over time. Natural Urushi lacquer provides a protective finish. Urushi is tapped from the lacquer tree, filtered, and traditionally applied in multiple thin layers, with each layer cured under controlled conditions before the next is applied.

The resulting surface has depth, subtle texture, and a warm sheen that changes with the light. It is designed as a functional natural-lacquer finish rather than simply a decorative coating.

The case still retains the character of leather while providing an additional protective surface for travel and everyday handling.

How the Packing Works

The storage design is intentionally compact.

The three cups nest inside the fairness pitcher. The flower-shaped separators sit between the cups to help prevent rubbing. The teapot rests beside the pitcher, cushioned by the tea mat or the shaped interior of the case.

The scissors, lid rest, and other small tools fit into the remaining spaces.

Close the lid, pull the carry cord, and the components stay snug inside the case.

There is usually a little extra room for one or two sessions' worth of loose-leaf tea in a small pouch. A full tea cake will not fit, but enough tea for a short trip can easily travel with the set.

Brew Anywhere, Without Leaving the Ritual Behind

This set is designed for people who want Gongfu tea to travel with them—not to replace the tea ritual with a disposable or mass-produced travel solution.

Use it for a campsite morning, a quiet office break, a picnic, a road trip, or a short outdoor tea session.

The case keeps the essential pieces together. The Zisha teapot brings the character of handmade clay. The small cups and fairness pitcher preserve the rhythm of Gongfu brewing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the teapot actually functional, or just decorative? I’ve seen handmade pots that dribble everywhere.
This is one of the most common complaints about handmade teapots, so we test every pot before it ships. Each spout is shaped and checked for a clean pour, and the lid seat is adjusted so the lid does not wobble or fall off during pouring. Because the pot is hand-pinched and wood-fired, there will be small variations in shape and surface, but a pot that dribbles badly or has an unstable lid is rejected. If yours has a functional issue, contact us—it should not leave the workshop that way.
Will the cups and pot survive shipping? Other travel tea sets arrive cracked.
We pack the teapot and cups inside the hard leather case with cushioning, separators, and the tea mat. The case is then packed in a padded outer box. The internal design keeps pieces from knocking against each other. If something does arrive damaged, send us clear photos of the breakage and the packaging, and we will replace the broken piece.
How many people does this actually serve? It looks tiny.
This is a gongfu-style travel set, so it is designed for one to two people using the three small tasting cups. It is not a western-style teapot that fills large mugs. The fairness pitcher holds one full brew from the teapot, and the three cups are meant for small, repeated infusions. If you usually drink tea alone or with one other person, this is the right size. If you need to serve four or more people, you would need a larger home set.
Is the urushi lacquer real, or is it just a synthetic coating?
It is real natural urushi tapped from lacquer trees, applied by hand in about 20 thin layers. It is not spray-on polyurethane, acrylic, or resin. The difference is visible and tactile: natural urushi has depth, subtle brush texture, and a warm glow instead of a flat plastic shine. It also protects the leather from moisture and rot in a way synthetic coatings cannot match.
Can I take this in a carry-on bag for a flight?
The teapot, cups, and leather case are generally fine in carry-on luggage. The aged iron tea scissors have a small blade and may be subject to airline security rules, so pack the scissors in checked luggage or leave them at home if you are flying carry-on only. Rules vary by country and airline, so check before you fly.
How do I clean the unglazed zisha teapot and the leather or urushi case?
Rinse the teapot and cups with hot water only. Do not use soap on the unglazed clay, because the porous surface can absorb the scent. Let everything dry completely before closing the case. Wipe the cowhide or urushi case with a soft dry cloth. Do not soak the case, do not put it in the dishwasher or microwave, and do not leave it in direct sun or on a radiator for long periods.
Will the wood-fired teapot look exactly like the photos?
No. Every teapot is hand-pinched and wood-fired, so the shape, fire marks, ash deposits, and color will vary. Your pot will share the same size and function, but it will not be identical to the listing photo. That variation is the point of handmade work—no two pieces are exactly the same.
I have a severe urushiol allergy. Is the urushi case safe to handle?
Uncured urushi can cause contact dermatitis, but this case is fully cured. Once urushi is cured, it is stable and generally safe for normal handling. If you have a known severe urushiol allergy, you may want to avoid prolonged friction contact and consult your doctor if you are concerned. Most people handle cured urushi without any issue.
