Liu Bao can naturally taste earthy, woody, mushroom-like, medicinal, or reminiscent of forest floor, but a clean earthy character is very different from a stale, moldy, sour, or rotten mustiness caused by poor processing or storage.
Ripe Pu-erh can taste earthy or woody because controlled wet-pile fermentation transforms the tea's original chemical and aromatic profile, producing a darker, smoother character that commonly includes woody, earthy, dried-fruit, cocoa, grain, and mineral-like notes. However, good ripe Pu-erh should not taste simply like damp soil; cleanliness and balance are essential.
