Gongfu Tea: The Universe of Chaoshan in a Pot and Three Cups
"A small pot holds a vast universe; the tea may be light, yet the human bonds are deep."
Step into any Chaoshan household, and—without the need for small talk or formalities—the host’s first act is to boil water and brew tea. Three small cups always sit upon the tea table, arranged like the points of an equilateral triangle, firmly supporting the character *pin* (品)—meaning "to savor" or "to taste." As the charcoal fire gently simmers, the water in the clay kettle begins to hiss. The host lifts the lid and pours—alternating between high and low streams—executing a sequence of movements as fluid as flowing water; it is a skill even a three-year-old might master. This is no mere performance; it is the way of life Chaoshan people have lived for over two centuries.
Gongfu tea is more than just a beverage. It represents the Chaoshan people's worldview: meticulous, exacting, and methodical, yet always imbued with the warmth of human connection.
The Obsession with Charcoal Stove: The Chaoshan Philosophy of "Living Fire"
Veteran tea drinkers in Chaoshan hold a near-obsessive preference for charcoal stoves. It is not that they are unaware of the convenience of electric stoves; rather, they are convinced that tea brewed over charcoal is simply in a league of its own.
Traditional Gongfu tea emphasizes "brewing with living water over a living fire." This concept of "living fire" is not mysticism but grounded in practical logic: charcoal provides a stable, gentle, and enduring heat, allowing one to carefully monitor the water's temperature. Locals prize olive-pit charcoal—specifically from black olives—for its dense texture, crisp sound when struck, and fine cross-section; it burns cleanly with minimal smoke or odor, providing a steady, even heat.
Complementing the charcoal are the clay stove and the sand-clay kettle. The stove is crafted from fired pottery clay; its simple design allows the material to retain heat, the walls to shield the flame, and the porous structure to ensure proper airflow. The kettle, made of sandy clay, heats evenly, lending a slow, delicate rhythm to the boiling process. Chen Songquan, a collector from Chaozhou, puts it beautifully: "Boiling water in a red clay stove to brew Gongfu tea embodies a philosophy of slowing down; watching the charcoal glow and fade while listening to the bubbling water allows the heart to gradually find peace."

from 1640 reviewsSlightly smaller than I had expected, but that’s my fault. A beautiful and delicate teapot, nonetheless. I have yet to use her as I’m busy with work, but I look forward to trying it out! She’s a beauty to have, and the staff was so kind and amazing too!
The mouthfeel of this Biluochun is exceptionally fine and smooth. Its standout feature is the subtle, airy orchid fragrance, making for a truly comforting experience.
I'm very, very happy with this product. I am so often disappointed with online purchases so I did not have high expectations. It was delightful to open the delivery box and see that this product is exactly as described. Same color, materials as expected, etc. When I put my little tea set in, it fit snugly and I feel confident it should transport it safely wherever I go.
I bought 2 more items at the same time - they all arrived together and were all as expected. Considering this is shipped from China, it also arrived within a very reasonable amount of time.
Very glad I found this store. :)
This is high quality, looks great, fits my little set perfectly
Exactly as pictured, a lovely item. My tea set fits snugly in it, I feel it will be safe.

Great introductory Gong Fu tea set. I love using it to Wulong tea outside in the summer.
Well made, portable, super light wait, beautiful design, good water storage for being such a compact size tray. Happy with the purchase
I normally prefer silver needle, but this king peony is delightful. I’ve been finding myself drinking it most days, and always looking forward to it. Definitely recommend!

I’d buy this clouds and mist tea for the leaves alone – beautiful, delicately twisted, gorgeous in the cup. Also a delightful flavor
Elegant needle leaves, even prettier than in the photo. I stepped gently in a gaiwan at 158F, and it was perfection. Subtly nutty and floral, so delicate!
This tea is exquisite. Beautiful, delicate leaves, a fresh, sweet aroma, and a lingering complex flavor. Steep it gently and a thousand flowers bloom.
This big golden needle is amazing. Full of complex dried fruit aromatics, and with a similarly unique and complicated flavor. Highly recommended!
